Achilles Tendinopathy

Achilles InjuryAchilles tendinopathy is a common cause of heel pain and lower calf pain, with stiffness at the back of the ankle. It affects runners and athletes, but it is just as common in people who are not especially active. The Achilles is the large tendon connecting the calf muscles to the heel bone, and it takes considerable force every time you walk, run or jump. The condition is still often called Achilles tendonitis, or tendinitis, although that name is misleading. The problem is usually a change in the structure and load tolerance of the tendon, not simple inflammation.

Signs and symptoms

The main symptoms are pain and stiffness in the tendon just above the heel bone. It usually develops gradually and is often most noticeable after rest, particularly first thing in the morning or after sitting for a while. Early on the pain may ease once you get moving, then return with prolonged walking, running or exercise. Over time it can appear after exercise and eventually during it.
